Simon Colvin & Gary Kelly

British Isles Pairs Champions

Simon Colvin and Gary Kelly claimed the pairs title on shot difference. Although they lost a close game with Wales by one shot over the four games they had a significantly better shot difference. Wales will be kicking themselves as they lost their only game to Scotland who finished bottom of the table. Simon and Gary were not at their best on Friday when they played the first two games and it would have been a major disappointment for them if they had not retrieved the situation on the second day with two fine wins. They were aware that they could not have any more slip-ups and came out in better form than the previous day with Simon in exceptional form at lead against Scotland. If they had of been able to display this form against Wales then they would have won the title with ease. Due to the format being a round robin their one blemish did not cost them. In their final game they had the luxury of losing three shots in the final end when Gary had a rush of blood and fired at the head resulting in his bowl flying over the fender approximately four feet above it. He regrets the incident and unfortunately used it as an escape valve after the opposition skip had shown bad sportsmanship in the very first end by loudly calling Gary’s bowl.

The calling of an opponents bowl is bad etiquette in any format of the game and it is time to totally erase it from the game. Enthusiasm is welcome but not if it results in bad etiquette.
