Lawrence McCarten, George Crothers and Paul Corvan from Armagh Golf Club represented Ireland in the triples. After sitting out the first round of matches they played the Welsh champions who had defeated the Isle of Man triple in their first game. They got off to a slow start and trailed 7-2 after 5 ends. A count of 3 shots on the next end cut the deficit to only 2 shots. Disaster struck on the eighth end with the Welsh triple collecting 4 shots to lead 12-5. The Irish triple picked up 2 shots on the last end to lose 14-9. Their next opponents were Scotland and the Armagh boys started brightly to lead 6-1 after 5 ends. Three shots on the seventh end and a further four shots on the eleventh end contributed to a 14-5 victory for the Irish triple. Day two started with the Isle of Man as the opposition. Once again Paul and his team mates raced into a 8-0 lead after 4 ends. A count of 4 shots on the seventh end put the Irish triple 13-1 ahead. Three shots were scored over the last 3 ends leaving the Irish triple 15-4 ahead. England were the last opponents for the Irish triple and they had won their 3 games including a 20-7 victory over Scotland and a 22-2 victory over the Isle of Man. If Ireland were to win the title they had to beat England by 14 shots and hope that Wales could not beat Scotland. The English triple led 3-1 after 2 ends but 4 shots for the Irish on the third end took them into the lead. Another 4 shots on the ninth end put Ireland 12-6 ahead. Three ends later it was all over with Ireland prevailing by 14-8 but not winning by enough to win the title. Good news filtered across from mat 3 where Scotland held Wales to a draw leaving the Irish triple in the runners-up spot! |
