This turned out to be a “what might have been” weekend for David Shields from Broughshane. He played the Welsh champion Gregg Gwyn in his first game and this match ebbed and flowed. The Welsh lad led 8-3 after 7 ends before David roared back to take an 11-9 lead with 2 ends to go. Disaster stuck over the last 2 ends with the Welsh champion scoring 3 shots on both ends to win 15-11. It was a similar story against the English champion Jon Pitcher in the next game. Shields trailed 7-2 after 5 ends only to come back to lead 12-9 after 12 ends. Two ends later the scores were level at 12 all. Pitcher decided to drive with the first bowl and missed. Shields did likewise. Pitcher got a toucher with his second bowl and went into the ditch leaving the jack live. Once again Shields fired and missed. Pitcher drew another shot with his third bowl but once again Shields elected to drive and again was off target. The English champion managed to slice the jack into the ditch leaving David the task of drawing near the ditch for victory with his last bowl. Unfortunately David was not able to do so and lost by 2 shots. This second defeat put him out of the running for the title. The second day saw David open his account by defeating the Isle of Man’s representative 15-6. David’s last match saw him play the Scottish champion Lawrence Moffat who had won 2 and drawn his other game. David produced his best bowls of the weekend to defeat Lawrence 16-12 and condemn him to the runners-up spot.
