AIIB NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Finals

Singles:
Gary Kelly
21

David Corkill 5

Kelly burnt the same head four times and when it was concluded at the fifth attempt he had drawn four bowls. The scorline does not reflect the quality of both players but on the day young Kelly played a magnificent all round game.

Pairs:

B Smyth & B Kane
9

I McClure & J Henry 22

McClure and Henry played an excellent game buiding heads and constantly putting their opponents under pressure right from the start of the game. Their PTIBC compatriots did not play badly but the consistency and very good start were key to the success of the Portrush duo.

Triples:

R.Coleman, A.Riley & B.Thompson 22

M.McPeak, S.Headley & R.Battersby 2

Brendan Thompson was in superb form and the stand out performer.
R Coleman had to withdraw during the game with serious illness to be replaced by Geoff Padgett.

Rinks:

R McCutcheon, F Anderson, A Patterson & G McKee
 15

JR Nicholl, M Nutt , S Coleman & B Thompson 21
[M Nutt Substitute for R Coleman who was hospitalised with illness]

Graham McKee was in brilliant form with some precision drawing and led for the majority of the game only for the Thompson rink to hit back and go into the final end two shots ahead.

Junior Singles:

Simon Colvin 4

Gary Kelly 21

Kelly raced into a seventeen shot lead before Colvin registered on the scoreboard which was harsh as Simon had played well. Gary was under pressure but responded with some top class conversion shots.

2 Bowl Pairs:
best of 3 sets, 7 shots up
G.Kelly & W.McCaw
v B.Prunty & P.Prunty BIBC

0-7, 7-4, 6-7.
Most exciting finish of the day as the game entered the final end at 6-6. Up came the mat and Kelly went for the jack with his first and drew with his second. Prunty drew two shots. McCaw drew second shot Prunty stayed well away from the head. McCaw drew to lie two inches in fron of the jack. Prunty with the last bowl of the game edged out the lying bowl to claim a gripping final and inflict the second successive defeat for the Kelly/McCaw pairing in the 2bowl final.
